About Lymphedema Therapy

If you are looking for lymphedema therapy, we highly recommend Manual Lymphatic Drainage. Lymphatic massage is usually part of a treatment program called decongestive lymphatic therapy. Lymphedema develops when there is damage to the lymphatic system or when the lymphatic flow is disrupted. Lymphedema is characterized by lymph fluid draining into the soft tissues which results in swelling. This usually occurs in the arms and legs but can also affect the face, neck and other parts too. If you have Lymphedema, be sure to contact us for a lymphatic massage to drain your excess fluid.

Types of Lymphedema

There are two types of lymphedema: primary, and secondary:

  • Primary lymphedema is either inherited at birth or is developed when the lymphatic system doesn’t develop properly.
  • Secondary lymphedema is caused by trauma to the lymphatic system resulting in blockage of lymphatic flow. It is most often caused by the damage to or removal of lymph nodes due to cancer treatments.

Symptoms of Lymphedema

When the lymphatic system is congested, there is a noticeable build of lymphatic fluid. As the lymphatic fluid builds up, there will be swelling of the extremities such as the arms, trunk, legs and more. There will be a feeling of heaviness, and discomfort in the arm or leg. You may even experience less flexibility in your hand, wrist or ankle. Infections that don’t heal fast, and an indentation on the skin wherever pressure is applied are all symptoms of lymphedema.

Cancer Survivors may get Lymphedema

Cancer treatments at times can cause lymphedema. Whether it’s the radiation that damages the lymph nodes, surgery, or bacteria entering into the body, there is a potential risk that a cancer patient can get lymphedema. Lymphedema can occur during or after treatment, and it can strike at any time. It is therefore beneficial to go your Doctor for regular checkups following treatment.

Common Causes of Lymphedema

Lymphedema can be caused by many types of risk factors. It can also be triggered by various types of cancers. Lymphedema could be caused by:

  • Genetics
  • Accidental bacterial infection
  • A Lumpectomy
  • Lymph node removal
  • A Biopsy
  • A Mastectomy
  • Traumatic injury
  • Radiation
  • Being overweight
  • Neuropathy

Cancers that often cause Lymphedema as a side effect are: breast cancer, Melanoma, prostrate cancer, colorectal cancer, ovarian cancer, head and neck cancers, lymph node sampling cancers, and radiation caused cancer to the lymph nodes. Please note that if you are currently battling cancer, a physician’s statement from your doctor with approval for our treatment will be required before we can perform our lymphatic massage.
